The distinction that matters is not online versus in-person but assessed versus unassessed. Blended courses move the knowledge online and keep an in-person session for the practical assessment, which preserves the part of the certification that carries weight. Fully online courses remove it, and with it the basis on which an employer or insurer accepts the certificate.
Blended delivery has a genuine advantage beyond compliance. Because the theory is completed beforehand, the in-person time is spent almost entirely on practice, so participants get more hands-on minutes than in a traditional single-day course where a third of the day is explanation. It is generally the most efficient format available.
Check what the practical session actually involves before booking, because "blended" is used loosely. A meaningful skills session means individual observation of each participant performing each skill. A short group demonstration that everyone watches is not the same thing, and the certificate it produces may not satisfy a requirement that specifies assessment.
Updated for 2026. Reviewed in 2026. The detail below is the current standard, and is worth reading alongside the article above.
Certification is valid for two years. The renewal position is worth stating plainly because it is often assumed otherwise: renewal is the same course, delivered in full.
Where a state or its Department of Health requires additional wording, it is added on a separate line beneath the course title. The course title itself is the same in every state.
