Group courses succeed or fail on scheduling more than on teaching. The two in-person days have to be days every candidate can attend in full, because each rescue skill is observed and signed off individually and cannot be made up online. A cohort where three people miss half a day becomes three people needing a separate session, which is expensive and frequently never happens.
The 7.5 hours of online training should be genuinely completed beforehand, not started the night before. Candidates who arrive having actually worked through the modules move through the practical days considerably faster, and the difference is obvious to instructors within the first hour. Setting an internal deadline a week ahead of the in-person days is a simple way to enforce it.
Decide in advance how failures will be handled, because in any sizeable cohort someone will not meet a standard. Knowing beforehand whether the organization funds a retake, and when the next opportunity is, turns an awkward conversation into a routine one, and makes it far easier for the instructor to hold the standard where it belongs.
Updated for 2026. Updated in 2026. What follows is the position as it stands today.
Certification is valid for two years. The renewal position is worth stating plainly because it is often assumed otherwise: renewal is the same course, delivered in full.
The certificate names the participant, the course, the issue date, the expiry date, the certifying instructor and the issuing organization.
