Hire a Lifeguard in Nassau County

Last updated

To hire a lifeguard in Nassau County, tell us four things: the water, the dates, the expected bather load, and what your operating permit says. Those four decide how many guards you need and what they have to hold. Everything else is scheduling.

Why being based in Nassau County matters

Our offices are in Valley Stream, which is in Nassau County. That is not a marketing line, it changes what we can actually do for you. A guard travelling from Valley Stream to a pool in Hempstead, Garden City, Freeport or Long Beach is making a short trip, not a commute across a county line, which is why short notice cover is realistic here in a way it is not everywhere.

It also means we run classes locally year round rather than seasonally. If the answer to your problem turns out to be certifying two of your own staff rather than hiring cover every weekend, that course is nearby and it does not require sending people to another county.

What should you tell us first?

The four things at the top of this page, in that order. Specifically:

If you do not know your surface area, say so. It is a common gap and it is measurable in a few minutes, but guessing at it is how facilities end up under-staffed on paper.

Hiring for a one off event

Private parties, catering hall functions, school and camp open days, and corporate days out are the most common single bookings in Nassau. The pattern is consistent: a fixed window, a group that is larger and less experienced in water than the facility usually sees, and often alcohol present.

Two things worth deciding before the day rather than during it. First, how many guards the water needs, which is a function of the pool and not of the guest list. Second, that the guard’s calls stand. A host who overrules a guard in front of guests has paid for supervision and removed its authority.

Seasonal cover

Nassau’s season is compressed and everybody wants the same weeks. Village and school district pools, condominium and co-op associations, beach and cabana clubs along the South Shore and day camps are all recruiting against each other from roughly the same pool of candidates, in the same eight weeks.

The practical consequence is that seasonal cover is a winter decision, not a spring one. A candidate has to pass a swim test and complete certification before they can stand a shift, and that sequence does not fit into May. Facilities that book or train in February open on time and the ones that start in May are the ones calling about gaps in July.

What causes short notice and mid season lifeguard gaps?

Guards quit, get injured, go back to school early, or let a certification lapse without telling anyone. A pool that cannot cover a shift has to close it, and a closed pool at a co-op or a club generates complaints immediately.

Short notice is where proximity does the work. Tell us the shift pattern rather than a single date, because a recurring gap is easier to fill reliably than a scattered one, and a guard who can hold the same Tuesday and Thursday all season is worth more to you than four different people covering the same hours.

When is training your own staff cheaper?

Often, and we will say so. If you need guarded water on a recurring schedule for more than a few weeks, certifying two or three of your existing staff usually costs less over a season than booking cover repeatedly, and it removes the dependency entirely.

Our lifeguard certification course is $195 and our certifications are approved in almost every state in the US and CMAHC approved. The maths is straightforward: compare that against what repeated cover costs you for the same hours. If your need is genuinely a single afternoon, hiring is the right answer. If it is every Saturday until Labor Day, it usually is not. See Lifeguard Training Class.

What should you expect from a guard we place?

A current certification you can inspect, CPR and AED at professional rescuer level, and first aid. Ask to see the certificate and check the expiry date rather than taking it on trust, and keep a copy at the facility, because a certificate held somewhere else satisfies nobody standing on your pool deck at an inspection.

Expect the guard to walk the site before they start, find the blind spots, confirm where the rescue equipment and the nearest AED are, and establish who they escalate to. A guard who sits down without doing that is not doing the job properly.

Who is responsible for what?

Whatever you are hiring for, the rule underneath it is the New York State Sanitary Code, 10 NYCRR Subpart 6-1. Supervision levels sit at 6-1.23 and turn on water surface area and bather load rather than on headcount alone, and the separate question of who runs the treatment plant sits at 6-1.2(l)(2). Those are state rules; your permit is issued and inspected locally. See How Many Lifeguards Does a Pool Need on Duty? What New York Actually Requires.

The division is simple. We are responsible for the guard being trained, current and competent. You remain responsible as the permit holder for the facility: the water quality, the equipment, the emergency action plan and whether the number of guards on duty actually matches what your permit and the code require. Hiring cover does not transfer that, and no staffing arrangement ever will. See Lifeguard Staffing Ratios and Safety Outcomes: What Facilities Must Know.

Frequently asked questions about how to hire a lifeguard in Nassau County

How quickly can you place a lifeguard in Nassau County?

It depends on the shift and the season. A recurring weekday gap is easier to fill than a single summer Saturday, which is the most contested slot on Long Island. Being based in Valley Stream helps on short notice, but July weekends are booked well in advance.

Can I hire a lifeguard for a single event?

Yes. Most private bookings carry a minimum number of hours, commonly two to four, with higher rates for evenings, weekends and holidays, which is when most events happen. Tell us the pool and the guest numbers and we will tell you how many guards the water needs.

How many lifeguards does my pool need?

In New York it is set by water surface area and bather load under 10 NYCRR 6-1.23, not by how many guests you invite. Your operating permit may also specify supervision directly, and where it does, that language governs.

Is it cheaper to hire or to certify our own staff?

For a single afternoon, hire. For recurring cover across a season, certifying two or three of your own people usually costs less and removes the dependency. Our course is $195, so the comparison against repeated booking is easy to run.

Do we still need a certified pool operator?

That is a separate obligation from lifeguard cover. Operating the treatment plant and supervising swimmers are different roles under different parts of the code, and a facility can need both. See the pool operator guidance for what the role involves.

What do you need from us on the day?

Site access, somewhere shaded with a view of the whole water, your rescue equipment and the location of the nearest AED, a named contact who will be present, and the address as emergency services would need it. Tell us about any medical issues among attendees.
