Maine has 215 named aquatic facilities on record across 16 counties, of which 180 are beaches or open water, about 84%. That is a large open-water share, but the course swim test is the same in every state: 300 yards, 2 minutes treading water and the brick retrieval, done at the in-person session.

The in-water skills are always evaluated in person on real equipment. No part of that assessment can be completed online, in Maine or anywhere else.
Classes are capped at ten candidates per instructor, so the practical assessment is done individually rather than in a crowd, and a second instructor is added above that number.
