To pass a lifeguard test in South Carolina, complete the prerequisite swim, tread water two minutes using legs only, and retrieve a 10-pound brick. Beach patrols add timed run-swim-run tryouts.
South Carolina has 198 named aquatic facilities on record across 22 counties, of which 58 are beaches or open water, about 29%. That is a large open-water share, but the course swim test is the same in every state: 300 yards, 2 minutes treading water and the brick retrieval, done at the in-person session.

The prerequisites are the part candidates most often get wrong. The minimum age to certify is 15, and the swim test is taken before the course begins, not at the end of it.
To certify you must attend every session, demonstrate each required skill to an instructor, and pass the written examination at 80 percent or better.
