Job Description:

Job Overview: The lifeguard ensures the safety of patrons by actively monitoring swimming areas, enforcing safety regulations, and responding promptly to emergencies. This role requires strong swimming skills, CPR certification, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Surveillance and Prevention: Maintain constant surveillance of assigned swimming areas to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of patrons. Proactively identify potential hazards and take corrective action to mitigate risks.

  2. Enforcement of Rules: Enforce pool rules and regulations to promote a safe and orderly environment. Educate patrons on proper swimming techniques and behavior to prevent accidents and injuries.

  3. Emergency Response: Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies such as drowning incidents, injuries, or medical emergencies. Administer first aid, CPR, or other life-saving techniques as necessary, following established protocols and procedures.

  4. Communication: Communicate clearly and effectively with patrons, colleagues, and supervisors. Provide instructions and guidance to patrons regarding safety procedures, pool rules, and emergency protocols.

  5. Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all lifeguard equipment, including rescue tubes, first aid kits, and communication devices, are in good working condition. Perform routine inspections and maintenance tasks as needed.

  6. Documentation: Complete incident reports, accident forms, and other documentation accurately and promptly. Maintain thorough records of all incidents, emergencies, and interventions.

  7. Teamwork: Collaborate with fellow lifeguards, facility staff, and management to promote a cohesive team environment. Assist with training, orientation, and ongoing professional development activities as required.

Qualifications:

  1. Lifeguard Certification: Possess current lifeguard certification from a recognized organization such as the American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent.

  2. CPR and First Aid Certification: Hold current CPR and First Aid certifications. Demonstrated proficiency in administering CPR and first aid in emergency situations.

  3. Swimming Ability: Strong swimming skills and proficiency in various water rescue techniques, including retrieval and towing of distressed swimmers.

  4. Physical Fitness: Maintain a high level of physical fitness and endurance to perform duties effectively over extended periods. Ability to lift and carry heavy objects and individuals when necessary.

  5. Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact professionally with patrons of all ages and backgrounds.

  6. Attention to Detail: Keen observation skills and attention to detail to identify potential hazards and respond promptly to emergencies.

  7. Reliability and Dependability: Demonstrated reliability and dependability in fulfilling job duties and responsibilities. Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Previous Experience: Prior experience as a lifeguard or in a related field is preferred but not required.

  2. Additional Training: Additional certifications or training in water safety, lifeguard management, or related areas are advantageous.

Working Conditions: The lifeguard primarily works in an outdoor or indoor aquatic facility, exposed to various weather conditions and temperatures. The role involves standing or sitting for extended periods, frequent movement around the pool area, and occasional exposure to chemicals used for pool maintenance. The lifeguard may need to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on facility hours and scheduling needs.
