American Aquatics and Safety Training runs blended lifeguard certification for candidates across Jefferson Parish. The county's largest communities are Kenner, Gretna and Harahan, and most candidates travel from those areas for the in-water portion. Coursework is completed online first, then the rescue skills, CPR/AED and First Aid sessions are done in person with an instructor.
The full lifeguard certification course is $195.00. It covers water rescue, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid in one package. Standalone CPR/AED is $25.00 and standalone First Aid is $19.99 if you only need to renew one component.
Pools. No open-water venue is recorded in Jefferson Parish. Named sites in Jefferson Parish include Overnight Guest Pool, Love Swimming and Social Pool. Whether a certification is accepted for waterfront or surf positions depends on the employer and, in some states, on state rules, so check the posting before you apply. Surf beaches often run their own qualifying test.
Most pool employers require candidates to be at least 15 years old on the final day of the course, and waterfront or beach positions usually require 16 or older. Individual employers in Jefferson Parish may set a higher minimum, so check the posting before you register.
You must swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes using legs only, and retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7 to 10 feet of water then return with it. The swim test is done at the start of the in-person session, so arrive ready to get in the water.
Candidates commonly travel from Kenner (63,333 residents), Gretna (17,026 residents) and Harahan (8,719 residents). Kenner is the largest community in the county, and certification is approved in almost every state in the US and CMAHC approved, so it stays valid if you take a job in a neighboring county or another state.
