Taking an online course to become an American Aquatics and Safety Training lifeguard has never been easier.

The American Aquatics and Safety Training online course prepares participants by providing teaching from industry leaders. Training programs are available both in-person and via a blended Simulation Learning experience, which combines online course work with face to face skills sessions. For those who hold a current lifeguarding certification, it is possible to take a re-certification program, too.

The American Aquatics and Safety Training Lifeguard Certification is consistently regarded as first-class and is also valid for two years from the date of successful completion.

Online Lifeguarding Courses

Now let's go through some of the most asked questions about taking an online course.

What will I need to take an Online Lifeguard Course?

When planning to take the American Aquatics and Safety Training online course, you simply need to register with a training program. This is needed by all potential participants to begin a lifeguard class and should take approximately 7 hours to complete the course. By the first day of class, all participants must be able to prove proof of registration and completion of the online course.

Participants in Lifeguard and Water Safety courses must be at least 15 years of age by the last day of class, and also pass a pre-course swimming skills test before the first day of training.

Basic swimming ability is expected to pass the relevant section of the course. You will need to be able to swim front crawl style for 100 yards, breaststroke for 100 yards, and complete a final 100 yards in either technique. Likewise, you will need to swim for 20 yards before completing a surface dive to retrieve a weight around 10ft below the surface. Students will then have to swim back to the starting point and climb out of the pool without the use of steps or a ladder. Treading water for two minutes without the use of arms is also required to take the online course.

What will the course cover?

The full course for American Aquatics and Safety Training lifeguard training takes approximately 20 hours in person with 8 hours online or 25 hours in person only.

In addition to the lifeguard certification programs, the American Aquatics and Safety Training provides a water safety class designed for individuals such as a lifeguard or swim coach who wants to improve their safety and others who may need help during times of crisis near water. The online Lifeguard and Water Safety training program has a variety of classes, including:

  • Water Safety Instructor
  • Safety Training for Swim Coaches
  • Lifeguard Management
  • First Aid/CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer
  • Basic Water Rescue
  • Small Craft Safety

Students will learn various rescue skills involving aquatic traversal, as well as first aid, AED, and CPR. After you've reviewed the training videos from the online course, you will need to take the final online written exam and score 80% or higher. If you don't pass, you can keep retaking the online exam with no additional fees!

Participants who successfully complete the online course will then receive their American Lifeguard certificate for First Aid/CPR/AED and Lifeguard training, which is valid for two years.

What will lifeguard training cover?

Once you have been enrolled on the course, you will receive the latest training from qualified professionals. In the US, the American Aquatics and Safety Training Lifeguard Certification is what most centers will offer, and is valid for two years upon successful completion. However, the specifics of courses can differ by State. Nonetheless, lifeguarding training always covers the following topics –

There is usually more than one basic lifeguarding course. For example, most centres teach basic lifeguarding, waterfront lifeguarding, water safety instructor skills, CPR/AED, and First Aid. Which class will be most suitable for your needs will depend on your existing competency and qualifications.

Ideally, training will take place in person, usually across a period of 26 hours of class teaching. However, there are also blended learning options whereby students combine in-person lifeguarding training with online lifeguarding classes. For this option, students will usually do 19 hours of in-person class training and 7 hours of online class. Both course options are excellent, so it is simply dependent upon which learning option best suits the individual.

To complete a lifeguarding class, students will have to demonstrate proficiency at all water-based skills as well as complete written examinations.

Once completed, you'll be a certified instructor for up to two years from the date of completion. After two years, lifeguards simply have to undertake a Lifeguard recertification course to ensure their skills are up-to-date and of the highest quality.

What are the benefits of Online Lifeguarding Courses?

Although it might not be something you have ever considered before, there is nothing more important than learning how to save someone's life. Knowing the right way to assist (whether it's first aid or aquatic traversal skills learned on the online course) is vital to saving those who need help. Now with the proliferation of the online course, this has never been more accessible. You can fit the online course into your regular schedule, as the time required to pass the online course is completely manageable. While the online course lacks some social elements of a group class, the flexibility of the course alone is worth a checkout!

If you are interested in learning how to do this, please contact the American Aquatics and Safety Training or the American Life Guard Association - the latter of which offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 30-day price match guarantee! Why not receive training from programs with operations approved by government agencies?

Once qualified, as long as you are over 15, you will be eligible to work at a pool, water park, or lake (or a beach if you are over 16). Even when the course is completed, you will still be expected to practice skills learned on the online course - practice does make perfect after all!
