What should I ask a swim school before I book?

• Instructor to swimmer ratio. Ask the number for your child's level, not the school average. It is the biggest difference between two schools at the same price.
• Is the water heated, and to what temperature? Ask particularly for lessons under age three, where a shared lap pool is often too cold to learn in.
• Are instructors certified in CPR, and is it current? Ask which certification and when it expires. A school that cannot answer quickly is not tracking it.
• Is a lifeguard on duty during lessons, separate from the instructor? An instructor who is teaching is not watching the rest of the water.
• Make-up lessons, and what happens if your child stalls at a level. This is where the cost goes.
