Lifeguard training is a structured, hands-on certification program that teaches individuals how to prevent, identify, and respond to water-related emergencies. This training includes rescue techniques, CPR, AED, First Aid, and professional surveillance methods to protect lives at pools, lakes, beaches, and waterparks.
Lifeguard certification is not optional, it’s a legal and professional necessity. Whether working at a public pool, private facility, or recreational camp, certified lifeguards provide a critical service by ensuring drowning prevention, injury response, and emergency coordination.

Updated for 2026. This article was reviewed in 2026 and the guidance below reflects how the course is run now.
Certification is issued only after both the written examination and the hands-on skills evaluation are passed. Neither substitutes for the other.
The course runs in two formats and both end at the same standard. In the classroom format all instruction, testing and skills evaluation happen in person.
