Injuries schools see, and the paperwork that follows

The routine caseload in a school is playground and PE injuries: sprains, fractures, knocked teeth, head bumps and cuts. Most are straightforward; the judgment is in deciding which need medical attention and which need an ice pack and a note home. Training that includes those decision thresholds is more useful day to day than training weighted towards rare emergencies.

Head injuries deserve a fixed rule rather than a judgment call, because the symptoms that matter often appear later. Schools that treat every head impact as a written record and a communication to parents, with clear guidance on what to watch for that evening, avoid the situation where a child deteriorates at home and nobody knew there had been an incident.

Recording matters more in schools than in most settings. An accident record protects the child, the staff member and the school, and it is the only reliable way to spot a pattern, the same step, the same piece of equipment, the same activity producing repeated injuries. Staff who know what to record, and do it while it is fresh, make that possible.

Updated for 2026. This article was reviewed in 2026 and the guidance below reflects how the course is run now.

Taken as blended learning, the CPR/AED in-person session is 170 minutes (2 hours 50 minutes) on top of the online coursework. First Aid runs 240 minutes (4 hours) in the classroom and 120 minutes (2 hours) in person when blended.

The skills evaluation is always conducted face to face with an instructor, on manikins and real equipment. It is never done by webcam or on a virtual manikin.
